Belleville Weavers & Spinners Guild

History

In February of 1956, Hazel Hayes, Ida Godden, Florence Ayling, Helen Sulman, Lil Watson, Lily Moult, and Janet Gilroy founded the Belleville Weavers Guild with the assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Belleville Recreation Dept. Their aim was to "further interest in weaving by sharing ideas and information and by planned programs." Today, the name and aims of the guild have been expanded to include spinning. 

Guild members have always been involved in the Quinte area with teaching demonstrations, fashion shows, "Sheep to Shawl" days, Pioneer activity days, children's craft days, community women's programs, the Corby Library Gallery's "Brown Bag Lunch" programs, and they are always glad to consider taking part in community events.

"The aims of the Guild are to further the interest in weaving and spinning, to increase public awareness and appreciation of these crafts, and to provide educational services to improve the skill and artistry of those participating."

Membership

The membership is open to all interested persons. Membership includes a monthly newsletter, eligibility to participate in workshops, guild shows and sales, use and rental of equipment, and library privileges. Instruction and assistance by members of the guild can be found in our monthly meetings, workshops, and study groups. Individual instruction in both weaving and spinning is also available. The guild is a member of The Ontario Handweavers' and Spinners' Guild, the Ontario Crafts Council, and the Quinte Arts Council.
