I am a silk artist and am largely self-taught. For a number of years I painted silk scarves as gifts for friends and family, working out of a studio in my basement. Last summer I decided to move beyond scarf painting and began experimenting on a larger silk ‘canvas’. I looked for inspiration in the works of Canadian artists such as Lawren Harris and Emily Carr, and accessed book and digital botanical resources in order to complete a series of botanical studies. Recently I was introduced to the silk artistry of Daniel Jean-Baptiste. I admired his ‘shimmering water’ technique and registered for his online tutorials so I could learn his method. I have used it successfully in several recent projects. It has pushed me to work outside my comfort zone.
