Peter Bates

In the past 20 years or so, Peter’s paintings have been displayed in a number of juried shows such as the QAC biennial Expressions Juried Show, the JM Parrott Gallery Show, and the Belleville Art Association Juried Show amongst others. His most recent solo show was held in August 2015 at the former Artists and Artisans Gallery in Belleville. In May 2021 Peter received one of two Jurors Awards for “Best Painting” in Expressions Show, and in December 2021, the Belleville Art Association’s Juried Show’s “Excellence In Design” award.

Says Peter, “My love of colour and interest in mass and form have led me to work in a relaxed, expressionistic style. I start my landscapes on-site, working directly in oil, to get down the composition and establish my colour palette. The painting is completed in my studio over a period of months, which gives me time to reflect on the work I am doing.|

Remarked Juror Kent about his 2021 winning painting, “Regeneration shows mastery of execution. It has a lovely sense of depth and perception. There is beautiful light in the background and in the foreground. Its asymmetry is pleasing, as is its organic patterning. It has an s-shaped composition, a landscape that juxtaposes the complementary colours which make the whole vibrate. It evokes many interpretations with its motion, balance and tension. It is like a well-crafted piece of music.”
