Joanne Rich was first introduced to lantern and papermaking at a high school enrichment camp in Toronto, where she spent five days living, learning and working with a professional artist. A decade later, after studying advertising at OCAD and working in a few agencies, only to realize it wasn’t for her, she thought back to that time: “I was sitting in my garden and kept thinking back to the experience in art camp, missing nature and daydreaming of making paper from my garden,” says Joanne. So through research, trial and error, and support from the Ontario Arts Council, she relearned the techniques for lantern and papermaking.
