QAC Statement Re: COVID-19

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 16, 2020: With the rapidly changing events related to COVID-19, and out of caution for the health and safety of all, many arts events are being postponed or cancelled. From live theatre to concerts, gallery openings to museums, the most moving of art experiences involve being in a crowd.

At this time, social distancing and\or isolation is encouraged by Health Canada to slow the spread of this pandemic which poses a challenge to the art world – postponing or cancelling events in the effort to contain the spread of the virus is commendable.

The Quinte Arts Council shares concerns for the artists in this community and across the globe. Most artists work independently. They don’t have one employer, they have several, so they have no sick pay. The CRA looks at them as independent contractors so they don’t qualify for EI (employment insurance). The Canadian entertainment unions have sent a letter  to the federal government asking for help, saying production insurance is not covering cancellations related to COVID-19.

As of Monday March 16th, the QAC will be closed to the general public until further notice. Should you wish to make an appointment, please feel free to contact the QAC to do so. We will be using this time to develop programming and professional development workshops we have planned for later in the year.
