I'll Stand With You

I'll Stand With You

I’ll Stand With You
Oil on stretch canvas
Bev Shepherd
12 x 16
$200

This painting portrays two figures looking
away, upon a wide open vista. The person
on the left resembles many artists’ depictions
of Jesus Christ, and on the right, a figure
wears a rainbow flag. The ‘title statement’
could be attributed to either figure,
depending on the viewer’s inner dialogue.
When I was painting this piece, I imagined
the man Jesus I learned about in Sunday
School, is hearing of the hatred and barriers
facing the LGBTQ community today and
responding “I’ll stand with you.” I do not
follow any religious practice but the painting
says what I need it to say to those who want
to limit rights and freedoms of others, and in
this particular piece, show my support of the
LGBTQ Community.

The Jokes on Them

The Jokes on Them
Quilted Cotton long-arm, hand guided
quilting, as directed – Deanna Gaudaur
(quintestudios.com)
Bill Stearman
55 x 64
$1650

This quilt is based on Brandi Carlile’s song,
‘The Joke’.
My own life experience bears out the words
from its chorus … ‘I have been to the movies,
I’ve seen how it ends, and the joke’s on them’.
This quilt is dedicated to the multitudes of us
who made it … in spite of the teasing, the
name calling, the put downs, the harassing,
the bullying and the beating that we received
growing up … just for being different; just for
being us.
And it is a reminder to those going through it
now that it gets better!

“Defying The Elements” This is my
neighbour’s truck. In real life, it’s white. In
Queer life, it’s pink, thanks to the joys of
Photoshop. Photographed on Curtis Street,
Picton, on the rainy night of October 25,
2021.I like the metaphor of the hot pink standing
in defiance of the drab surroundings. A true
testimony to the power of fabulosity!

$1800

This quilt is inspired by a recording of Milck
singing her song ‘Quiet’ with 1300 voices in a
Choir, Choir, Choir YouTube video (follow
the QR Code). The song deals with coming to
terms with past sexual abuse; speaking out
about it. Healing from it. Listening to this
inspired me to tell my own story. Through
telling my story, I learned to see myself as a
survivor of childhood sexual abuse, after
years of feeling a victim. Talk about it folks.
It might help others. And it will help you.

Coming Out
Acrylic paper on canvas
Sarah Palmer
24 x 24
$2500

Coming Out, is a new painting that is very
different from my previous work. I typically
feature only one or two characters in my
paintings and drawings. A person who is
coming out shares their sexual orientation or
gender identity openly with other people and
has to deal not only with their own feelings
but the feelings of family and friends and
with institutional and social pressures. The
many figures in my painting represent the
many players in the process of coming out.

My drawings contain facial expressions. I love drawing the mouth. Drawing is a very carefree experience. I paint on larger canvases using acrylic paint and add collage material to my paintings. My paintings range from landscape to abstract. I recently started creating figures with a wider variety of bodies and in different positions. The pieces I have included in the show demonstrate two ways of being in the world. One shows development of self arising out of specific spot. The figure is able to slip into that spot, fit in. The character is expressed in the attire. The other figure is not connected to its place of origin, it does not fit in to the background literally. This figure has undergone top surgery and is less bound to attire and categorization.

As I observed the loss of what I see as basic
human rights and freedoms south of the
border, I became filled with terror at the
thought that this trend might spread to
Canada. In the midst of this feeling of terror,
I watched a video of Patti Smith singing,
‘People Have the Power’ (follow the QR
Code). This song reminded me that stopping
the trend; protecting our Canadian values, is
up to us all! We have the power. Let’s use it!

With a wink to the beauty of neon signs and appreciation of sex workers, GIRLS is fun and silly with a little subversive twist. Like much of my work it is fun and colourful and gives you a little smile if you are inclined.
