Honouring Black History Month Through Community, Culture, and Creative Practice
By the Quinte Arts Council

Black History Month is a time to honour the histories, contributions, and ongoing cultural leadership of Black communities, while also reflecting on how we show up—today and everyday—to support equity, inclusion, and creative expression.
At the Quinte Arts Council, we are committed to supporting BIPOC artists and cultural leaders by creating space for artists to work, share knowledge, and build community. This includes offering our Cultural Hub as a welcoming, accessible place where artists can lead, teach, and create on their own terms. Representation in the arts matters—not only on our walls and stages, but in who is centered, supported, and heard.
This February, we are proud to highlight and support Dr. Isaac Akrong, an accomplished cultural practitioner whose work bridges tradition, education, and community connection. Dr. Akrong leads drumming classes every Friday at 5:00 pm, open to all experience levels. These sessions invite participants to explore rhythm as a shared language—one that carries history, resilience, and joy.

Drumming traditions across the African diaspora have long been tools for storytelling, ceremony, and collective strength. By opening our doors to these practices, we aim to honour cultural knowledge while creating opportunities for meaningful exchange and learning within our local arts community.
We invite you to drop in, take part, and experience the energy of live drumming in our space. Whether you are picking up a drum for the first time or simply listening and learning, you are welcome.
Black History Month reminds us that supporting Black artists and cultural workers is not a one-month commitment—it is ongoing work. At the Quinte Arts Council, we continue to listen, learn, and take action to ensure our Cultural Hub reflects the diversity, creativity, and voices of the community we serve.
