Quinte Arts is hosting a powerful exhibition in July by bilingual Quinte West artist and educator Edith Lepage Crete, entitled Fury and Grace. Working in acrylic, Crete presents visceral landscapes, explosive forces of nature, and moments of gentle serenity.
There is a poetry to Crete’s approach, both personal and profound. “The canvas is a mirror of my inner world. Through light, movement, and texture, I translate emotion into form. My work seeks the meeting point between strength and serenity, where beauty becomes both refuge and revelation.”
Crete’s latest showcase is infused with an adventurous spirit, exploring the strong connections between our inner lives and an exterior world beyond our control.
“Step into a world where the sky meets the sea and nature’s duality is on full display. Fury and Grace: Sky and Sea invites you to experience the artist’s impressions of the elements, captured in a series of evocative paintings.
At times soft and serene, these landscapes of skies and seas are wrapped in cooling, gentle hues that transport you to a place of quiet introspection and tranquility. They echo moments of stillness and the intriguing whispers of nature.
In contrast, other works unleash the raw, unbridled power of nature—a celebration of its dynamic and untamed energy. From tempestuous storms to crashing waves, these paintings showcase the spectacular clash of elements that Crete finds both mesmerizing and awe-inspiring.
“These pieces are not depictions of specific places, but rather fragments of memories and meticulously studied inspirations. Together, they form a powerful narrative of nature’s beauty, its fury, and its grace.”
The opening reception for Fury and Grace offers a chance to meet the artist – it takes place on Thursday, July 2 at 4:00 p.m. at the Quinte Arts Cultural Hub and Gallery, 36 Bridge St E. in Belleville, and the exhibition will run through to July 31st.
